What is the Cheer Fund?
Jun 11th, 2007 by roy
Summerseat was dominated by Hoyle’s Mill on the Irwell, now the Spinnings complex of flats. The fund was originally administered by the Personnel Department of the company and provided support and Christmas goodies for elderly former employees.
During the ‘60’s as the mill reduced its activities (eventually closing in the 1970’s), it was transferred to a group of villagers who continued its hard work by providing Christmas parcels to the elderly and unwell who live in the village.
It is run by a Committee of about 10 villagers who are drawn from different parts of the village or who have had long connections with the village. The general policy of the fund is the responsiblilty of a smaller group of Trustees. These are in turn accountable to the Chariry Commission.
The committee tries to try to keep an up to date register of villagers but mistakes do happen and people don’t always get properly listed. Apologies for anybody to whom this has happened. It can be difficult to subtly ask for peoples age! If you know somebody who could be elligible for a parcel please contact us.
